Amidst the ongoing admission process at Delhi University (DU), many students are grappling with seat upgrades and vacancies. With the university recently concluding an upgrade round, numerous students have raised concerns about the limited availability of seats. We spoke to Dr. Savita Rai, Principal of Daulat Ram College, to gain insights into the current status of seat allocations and the future prospects for students. In this article, we’ll cover DU CSAS Round 3: Is Upgradation Still Possible? ECA Sports CW.

Current Scenario of Seat Upgrades and Vacancies
Dr. Rai emphasized that the upgrade process is entirely computerized and based on the choices filled by the students and the availability of seats. “If a student has opted for an upgrade in a course or college where seats are already filled, no upgrade will be granted,” she stated. Despite some seats being available, the university cannot guarantee upgrades for all students, as it depends on the specific courses and colleges chosen.
Approximately 28,000 seats are still vacant, and students can try their luck in the next round of admissions. However, this process is continuous, and there is no certainty that vacancies will be available in the desired courses or colleges during subsequent rounds.
Available Seats and Course Options
Dr. Rai highlighted that the majority of the vacant seats are in science, Hindi, and Sanskrit courses. Seats in economics, political science, and history are mostly filled, except for a few seats reserved under special categories such as CW (Children/Widows of Armed Forces Personnel) and ECA (Extra-Curricular Activities). These reserved seats are allocated to eligible candidates based on the specific criteria set by the university.
For students seeking upgrades, Dr. Rai advised thorough analysis before applying, especially if their preferred courses or colleges are not offering the desired combination of subjects.

The Impact of the ECA Category on Admissions
ECA results have created a unique challenge for some students. For example, one student, currently enrolled in Geology (Honors) at a college, desired an upgrade to her first or second preferred college. However, those colleges did not offer her chosen extra-curricular activity, yoga, making her upgrade difficult.
Dr. Rai explained that in such cases, students must carefully evaluate their choices before applying for an upgrade. If the required activity is unavailable at the desired college, they may not secure the upgrade and could risk losing their current course.
Third Round of Admissions and Future Opportunities
Dr. Rai confirmed that the third round of admissions would bring new opportunities for students, particularly in science, Hindi, Sanskrit, and some BA program courses. The university will issue a fresh notification outlining the criteria for the next round. Unlike previous rounds, the cut-offs for the third round will not align with earlier ones, ensuring a new beginning for all applicants.
Regarding the potential of filling remaining seats based on Class 12th marks, Dr. Rai stated, “If seats remain vacant after the third round, the university may consider admitting local students based on their 12th-grade marks.”
Advice for Students
For students who have secured a seat but have not yet joined their respective courses, Dr. Rai urged them to commence their studies immediately. “Classes have begun in full swing, and students who delay joining are missing crucial learning opportunities, including detailed orientations on course design and degree planning,” she added.
Conclusion
With many seats still available, students are encouraged to remain optimistic and explore all available options in the upcoming rounds. However, they should carefully review their choices and prioritize courses that align with their academic interests and aspirations. The university continues its efforts to accommodate all eligible students while ensuring a fair and transparent admission process.
