The initial rush for university seats creates an impression that all seats are filled. But that’s not always the case. Last year we saw a similar trend where seats were still available till the end of the admission cycle. The reason behind this was the large number of students opting for seat upgrades rather than finalizing their admission in the first round.

This year too the trend is repeating itself but with more intensity. A large number of students have opted for seat upgrades, which means a large number of seats will still be available for new applicants or those who want to change their course or college.

As of August 21, the data shows that 42,668 students have opted for seat upgrades at DU. That’s a big number especially when you consider the original number of seats which was 71,600 and the extra allocation which took the total to 97,387. Despite all these seats, many students are still looking for better opportunities within the university.

Interestingly the number of confirmed admissions is reported to be 6,520 but when we cross-check with the data of those who have opted for upgrades or confirmed their seats, the number is lower. This difference could be due to administrative delays or students’ indecisiveness in finalizing their admission.

The large number of students opting for upgrades is an opportunity for new applicants or those who couldn’t get a seat earlier. The fact that 42,668 students are still looking to upgrade means a large number of seats will open up in the second round of admissions.

So let’s get to the nitty-gritty of “freezing” a seat and opting for an upgrade. Freezing a seat means the student is happy with the allotted course and college and doesn’t want to participate in further rounds of counseling. As of now, 1,786 students have frozen their seats which is a small number compared to those who are looking to upgrade. This difference means a large number of seats will open up as students move to their preferred choices.

If you haven’t got a seat yet or are not happy with your current allocation, the second round might be your chance. The high number of students opting for upgrades means they are not happy with their initial allocation, be it the course or college, or both. This unhappiness plus some students might withdraw their admission altogether increases the chances of seats in upcoming rounds.

Also, some students have already got admission to private colleges but are holding onto their DU seats as a backup. This situation will further free up seats in near future if these students decide to stick to their private college choices.

The appeal of certain colleges like DU’s North Campus is also playing a role in these trends. Many students and parents are willing to withdraw from less preferred colleges if they don’t get a seat in these premium locations. This adds another layer of complexity to the admission process as some students might withdraw from the process if their ideal preferences are not met.

The university’s admission branch allows students to reorder their preferences as the rounds go on, so there’s more flexibility and chance for applicants to get their desired course and college.

The initial rush for seats in universities might create a sense of panic but remember the admission process is dynamic. The high number of students opting for upgrades in DU is a clear indication that many seats will open up in next rounds. If you haven’t got a seat yet or looking for better options, the second round might be your chance.
