Major Changes in the BA Program
Delhi University has made many changes to its curriculum from 2022 onwards as per NEP (National Education Policy) and UGC (University Grants Commission) guidelines.
One of the biggest changes is in the BA Program which is now called the “Two Core Program” where students can study two subjects simultaneously.
These subjects can be a combination of any subjects like History, Political Science, Computer Science, Sanskrit, or even foreign languages like Spanish.
BA Program Structure
As per the new NEP 2022 guidelines, the BA Program structure is more flexible and holistic. Here’s a breakdown:
- Two Core Disciplines: Students choose two main subjects or disciplines, which can be any combination, like History and Political Science, or Computer Science and Sanskrit.
- Credit System: The courses are designed with a credit system, where students study 22 credits per semester. These credits are divided among:
- Discipline-Specific Core (DSC) Courses
- General Elective (GE) Courses
- Ability Enhancement Courses (AEC)
- Skill-Based Courses (SBC)
- Value-Added Courses (VAC)
- Language Requirements: In the first semester, students will study an English language course and in the second semester, they will study a language of Indian origin like Hindi, Sanskrit, Punjabi, or Bengali. This ensures students are proficient in both global and regional languages.
- Ability Enhancement and Skill-Based Courses: These courses aim to enhance specific skills and abilities, including environmental studies and other Indian languages. This ensures a holistic education.
- Flexibility in Credits: Students can take additional credits if they want, ranging from 18 to 26 credits per semester, as per their capacity and interest.

Major and Minor Degrees
The new structure also allows students to major and minor in different subjects. For example:
- To minor in a subject, a student needs to complete at least 7 courses (28 credits) in that subject.
- To major in a subject, a student needs to complete 20 courses (80 credits) in that subject throughout the degree.

Combining Subjects
The combination of subjects chosen during admission will be fixed. For example, if a student chooses History and Political Science, they will have to decide which subject they want to major in and which as a minor. This combination helps in specialization and provides depth in both the chosen subjects.
Changing Subjects
One of the unique features of the new BA Program is the flexibility to change subjects after the first year. If a student feels more inclined towards Political Science rather than History, they can switch their major at the end of the first year. But this change is only allowed once and cannot be changed in subsequent years.
Addressing Parental Concerns
Some parents worry that the BA Program is inferior to Honors courses. Professor Arora clarifies that the BA Program is not lesser in any way. It offers flexibility and breadth, where students can explore and excel in multiple subjects. The degree is from Delhi University, so it’s credible and valuable.
Conclusion
New BA Program under DU as per NEP 2022 has a flexible, broad, and skill-based curriculum. Students can study multiple subjects, get majors and minors, and tailor their education to their interests and career goals. We hope this helps you understand the new structure and opportunities in the BA Program at DU.
